Are You Over 40? Do You Have A Tough Time To Lose Weight Permanently?

"There is too much to do. My days are very hectic- I'm always on the go." Is that you? And: If you'd like to lose weight permanently over 40, has this life-style something to do with permanent weight loss?

Stress can be good. Stress hormones put ourselves on the fast track, we are high-energy and powerful. Yet, long time stress is a severe health risk: Diabetes, hard attacks, high blood pressure etc. are correlated with stress.

Yet worse: Stress makes you fat and keeps you from losing weight permanently. If you are stressed out day in and day out, you'll increase your weight on your belly and your hips: stress fat. When your body needs energy, the stress level increases. When our ancestors had to deal with physical challenges, this energy releasing mechanism was very useful.

Nowadays, we do not need to react to physical threats any longer. There is no need to fight wild animals. Our problem solving mechanisms need to be mental. So the stress fat sits on our bodies and doesn't get burned. For women over 40 stress fat particularly hightens the risk of high blood pressure, higher cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, strokes and heart diseases.

In stressful situations the adrenal gland releases adrenalin. The blood sugar rises and the metabolism slows down so there is more energy available. You can't lose weight permanently when you are under long-time stress, because you burn less calories. In addition, shifting blood sugar levels will cause hunger- pressuring you to eat more although you burn less.

Even worse: stress releases cortisol, a hormone affecting your immune system, muscles and bones. Your chance to get a contagious disease is heightened, muscle mass reduces and bone density is getting less.

Cortisol has another dangerous result lowering your ability to lose weight permanently. The body's energy storage is filled up when your stress level is reduced. Cortisol will give you a voracious appetite then. Have you ever observed that in stress-reducing, relaxing phases you don't want vegetables or fish, but high-calorie food, like sweets, ice cream, chocolate or cookies?

The longer fat cells are exposed to high cortisol levels, the sensitive they become. The amount of fat cells increases because of this process, making it tougher for you to lose weight permanently.

Endless stress means endless hunger at a decreased metabolism. When we grow older we usually accumulate more responsibilities- and accordingly more stress. To lose weight permanently over 40 you'll need to scale down stress.

Especially for women over 40 it's very difficult to lose weight permanently when the stress level is high. Women over 40 often have points of eating not enough, followed by periods of time of eating too much if they are chronically stressed. This leads to fluctuating weight making it hard to lose weight permanently for women over 40.
