How The Feeling Of "I am Hungry" Is Produced
By Perry Permann
If you want to lose weight permanently, you'll have to deal with the feelings of being hungry. It's much easier to handle these feelings, if you know how they are produced. Especially if you are over 40 the naturally increasing tendency of the body to store fat makes it important to know how the emotion of "I am hungry" is created in your body. Emotion causes many of our activities. Are you more driven to act when you feel hungry or full? Our human nature is interesting: There is no system in place restricting our calorie consumption. However, if you feel hungry you have to eat to satisfy that feeling. Hunger seems to dominate many other emotions necessary to survive. This made a lot of sense in the Stone age, where people had to survive in periods of little to no food. Now, with fast food restaurants in every mall, this mechanism makes it hard to lose weight permanently. Hormone alterations often begin taking place when you are over 40, and the feelings of hunger are sometimes more overwhelming. Are you aware of how your body develops the feelings to let you know you are hungry? There are two systems in place in your brain that require balance in order for you to lose weight over 40: The calories you put in your body, and the amount of energy available. If the energy accessible in your body drops to a certain level, feelings of "hunger" are produced and you then think of eating. This is totally natural, and not a weakness in your character. There is a difference between feeling satisfied and feeling full. As you know, after 40 your body burns less calories- so you should eat until you feel satisfied and stop eating when you’ve reached that point to lose weight permanently. Interestingly, we normally stop eating before our bodies absorb the nutrients in the foods we eat. The feeling of being satisfied comes largely from how much time you take to eat and how often you eat. An simple way to lose weight permanently is to increase the number of meals and the time spent eating- you’ll feel satisfied earlier. However, you must be conscious of what you eat. Watching TV, driving or reading while you eat will distract your mind, and it won't register that you are eating. This will cause you not to realize when you are satisfied, and you will end up consuming more, which will jeopardize your attempt at permanent weight loss. Neuropeptide Y and many other substances signal the brain that you need to eat. Neuropeptide Y is one of them. It causes you to feel hungry, suppresses physical activity and increases the amount of energy stored as fat. If you stop eating, for example when you go on a diet, Neuropeptide Y is released. This is why you find it difficult to lose weight permanently, and sometimes feel like your energy is low: The less you eat, the more the endocrine system protects your body fat. This protection continually increases after 40, and the only way to lose weight permanently is by implementing a gentle lifestyle concept. Numerous Neuropeptides are involved in making you feel hungry. Orexin A and B are released when you feel hungry, and they make food cravings and overeating, which is common when you are on a diet. This is the nature of your body, not a lack of will power on your part. Another Neuropeptide is Leptin. Leptin is created by fat tissue and tells your brain how filled the fat storage system is. Women have higher levels of Leptin, because the naturally have more body fat than men. You will begin to feel hungry when the Leptin levels drop under a certain point. The body image in western culture is extremely shaped by artificially thin celebrities. Without body fat you will feel hungry all the time, which can lead to many emotional problems - and a certain amount of body fat is actually healthy.
